Portable Ramps
Portable Ramps for Travel and Home
Portable ramps offer a flexible, temporary accessibility solution for homes, vehicles, and everyday outings. Whether you need a ramp for short-term recovery, everyday mobility support, or occasional travel, NSM can help you find a portable ramp that balances safety, convenience, and ease of transport. Our team can help you choose the right length and style based on your doorway height, vehicle access needs, and the person using the ramp, giving you the freedom to safely go wherever you desire.
Considerations When Choosing a Portable Ramp
The best portable ramp for you depends on where you plan to use it and how often you need to move it. They are most often used for entering and exiting cars, SUVs, and trucks but can also provide safe access when visiting family and friends who may not normally have accessibility devices in their homes. Shorter ramps are easier to carry and store, while longer ramps may provide a more gradual incline for added comfort and safety.
If you’re unsure which mobile ramp option is right for your situation, NSM can help you compare models and find a fit that works for your mobility needs.
FAQs about Portable Ramps
1. How do I calculate what length of portable ramp I need?
To determine the correct ramp length, you first need to measure the rise (the vertical height from the ground to the highest step, landing, or vehicle trunk).
For independent wheelchair users (unassisted): The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) recommends a 1:12 slope ratio. This means for every 1 inch of vertical rise, you need 1 foot (12 inches) of ramp. (Example: A 6-inch step requires a 6-foot ramp).
For occupied scooters/wheelchairs with an assistant, or unoccupied loading: A steeper 2:12 slope ratio is often acceptable. This means for every 2 inches of rise, you need 1 foot of ramp. (Example: A 12-inch vehicle rise requires a 6-foot ramp).

2. What is the weight capacity of your mobile ramps?
Despite being lightweight and easy to carry, our aluminum portable ramps are highly durable. Most of our folding and suitcase ramps (such as the EZ-ACCESS® series) have a weight capacity of up to 800 pounds. This heavy-duty capacity safely accommodates manual wheelchairs, heavy power wheelchairs, mobility scooters, the user, and an assisting caregiver. Always check the specific weight rating of the model you select before use.
3. Can I use a portable ramp to load a wheelchair or scooter into an SUV or van?
Yes. Portable ramps, specifically multi-fold or tri-fold models, are excellent for loading mobility devices into SUVs, vans, and trunks. Because vehicle entry points are typically higher than standard home steps, we recommend a longer, multi-fold ramp that can fold down to a compact size to fit easily into your trunk alongside your mobility device.
4. Does Medicare or insurance cover the cost of a portable ramp?
Generally, traditional Medicare (Part B) does not cover portable ramps, as they classify them as convenience items or home modifications rather than durable medical equipment (DME). However, alternative funding options may be available:
- Medicaid: Many state Medicaid waiver programs (like HCBS waivers) cover home accessibility modifications, including ramps.
- Long-Term Care Insurance: Some private policies cover home modifications that allow you to age in place.
- VA Benefits: The VA offers grants (such as SHA or HISA grants) that may cover wheelchair ramps for eligible veterans.
Our local branches can help you navigate your insurance options and provide detailed quotes for submission.
5. What is the difference between a single-fold and a tri-fold portable ramp?
The main difference lies in how they fold, their length, and how easy they are to transport:
-
- Single-Fold Suitcase Ramps: These fold in half lengthwise like a suitcase and feature a carrying handle. They are typically shorter (2 to 6 feet long) and are ideal for low steps, single curbs, or doorways.
