The State of Connecticut passed legislation to drive focus to the timeliness of repairs to customized wheelchairs for all residents of Connecticut. PA 24-58 applies to all Connecticut residents. Residents with Connecticut Medicaid have had Prior Authorization removed from obtaining repairs, while other private or public insurance may require prior authorization before services can be rendered.

The CT law, PA 24-58 (codified at CT Gen. Stat. §§ 42-337(5) and 42-338(a)) requires that a wheelchair supplier complete repairs within ten (10) business days, excluding days waiting for any required [insurances that require] prior authorization and days in transit for ordered parts being shipped.

Connecticut law requires authorized wheelchair dealers to inform consumers of their rights regarding wheelchair repairs.

You Have the Right to Timely Repairs

If your wheelchair was sold or leased by an authorized wheelchair dealer, the dealer is required to provide timely repair services for your wheelchair, including complex rehabilitation technology (CRT) wheelchairs.

You Have the Right to Receive Timely In-Home Repairs Upon Request

If you use a complex rehabilitation technology (CRT) wheelchair, you may request that repairs be performed at your home.

How to Request Repairs

Authorized wheelchair dealers must maintain:

  • A telephone number for repair requests
  • An email address for repair requests

These communication methods must be available each business day and capable of receiving and recording messages.

Required Response Times

When you request a repair:

  • The authorized wheelchair dealer must respond to your repair request within one business day of receiving it.
  • The dealer must order required repair parts within three business days after determining the repair needs or after receiving any required insurance authorization.
