With denial trends for complex rehab equipment on the rise, now more than ever, a new approach to documenting medical need is required to secure authorizations for the complex rehab equipment our clients use for their mobility and activities of daily living.  This class will review documentation requirements and highlight critical elements that are often missing from current LMN’s.  The PEPL Protocol, pronounced people, is a problem-oriented acronym that will help occupational and physical therapists document medical need for complex rehab equipment in an organized way.  PEPL stands for Problem, Equipment, Prevention, and Less Costly Alternative.  During this class the participants will use the PEPL Protocol to compose medical necessity statements for clients with different mobility impairments and equipment needs.

This course reviews updates on current guidelines of transporting children with special needs per the 2019 American Academy of Pediatric Policy Statement.  Various child restraint options including infant car beds, vests, car seats, and booster seats will be presented as options for infants and children with special needs including those with risk of airway obstruction, tracheostomy, muscle tone abnormalities, gastrointestinal issues, casts and challenging behavior.  Case studies will be presented to reinforce clinical application of various restraints. Additionally, the importance and necessary components of hospital-based multi-disciplinary child passenger safety programs will also be discussed as a means to increase child safety and prevent delays in hospital discharges.

For children with disabilities who are unable to transfer from their wheelchair when traveling in motor vehicles, and the wheelchair serves as the vehicle seating system a thorough review of ANSI/RESNA and ISO safety standards and transit compliance will be presented.  This includes selection of appropriate transit options for wheelchairs (WC19) and seating systems (WC20), as well as securing the wheelchair in the vehicle (WC18) using Wheelchair Tie-down and Occupant Restraint Systems (WTORS).

As humans we are designed to stand; not just stand occasionally; but spend most of our days standing.  We stand to work; we stand to perform our daily activities and self care; and we stand in sometimes to play or socialize.   Unfortunately, not everyone gets the luxury of standing and research is beginning to show the negative impact of prolonged seated positions. So why have we been so hesitant to move our patients to power  standing mobility?   A big reason is the process of obtaining power standing mobility has long been difficult and overwhelming even for the best clinicians and equipment suppliers.

Providing power standing mobility is now taking center stage in the world of CRT as many funding sources are viewing the medical and functional benefit to standing. In this course we will review the benefits of standing both medical and functional, the ongoing cost of sitting, and how to improve delivery of power standing mobility to get the best outcomes for your clients.

This course is designed for clinicians to enhance their knowledge and clinical application of the subject matter: considering mobility equipment as it relates to development. As part of this course, we will discuss the application of mobility equipment to support the development of self-initiated movement for function and participation. Additionally, the course will review specific challenges related to children with disabilities or delay, current evidence, and the assessment and prescription of products pertaining to on-time mobility or function desired.

Assessing an end user for power mobility can be an intimidating task. Decisions that are made will have an impact on the individual’s quality life, functional mobility, physical well-being, and social interactions. This task can seem even more daunting when it comes to the pediatric end user. Children have the natural desire to move, explore, and learn. Research has shown that there is a strong correlation between self-initiated mobility and the development of visual, cognitive, social, language, and perceptual skills. This course will discuss the characteristics and decision-making process for children with CP, as well as the special considerations on early power mobility intervention. Current and relevant research will be discussed as it relates to assessment, timing, and outcomes when early power mobility is recommended and prescribed for those that demonstrate the needs.
