Commercial Ramp Installation Improves Access to Brooklyn Public Library

Overview

National Seating & Mobility is an experienced supplier of diverse accessibility solutions including ramps, stairlifts and wheelchair lifts. We recently had an opportunity to assist the Brooklyn Public Library, which is graded as the fifth largest public library system in the United States. Our team installed a commercial ramp to improve ease of access to this library.

The Challenge

According to the American Library Association (ALA), libraries play a catalytic role in the lives of people with disabilities by facilitating their full participation in society. Libraries should use strategies based upon the principles of universal design to ensure that library policy, resources and services meet the needs of all people. The Brooklyn Public Library faced an accessibility issue they needed to address with a proper solution.

They called us for a solution to improve accessibility to wheelchair users in their building. Our challenge was to fabricate a ramp for a tight space with special angled turns, while also ensuring minimum hassle and stress for users.

The Solution

Our team of technicians visited the site to study the layout and specific requirements. Our focus was on designing a ramp that would make the library space barrier-free and offer the greatest convenience for users. We successfully worked around the space and layout constraints and installed a custom commercial aluminum ramp for this library. This ramp features picket safety rails and a continuous inner hand rail.

Our team completed the installation within a day and this improved access to this library.
