One year ago this month, eight-year-old Addison visited NSM’s Milwaukee, WI branch office for evaluation, in hope of getting a new wheelchair. Addison has Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA), a chromosomal disorder that affects the control of muscle movement.
Children with SMA, and younger than eight, are usually issued strollers with full recline capability, like Ki Mobility’s EaSyS stroller or Ottobock’s Kimba stroller. Beyond age seven though, such chairs provide little room for a growing child. Such was the case with Addison.
Jeff Auter, Assistive Technology Professional (ATP) and Rehab Technology Supplier (RTS) at NSM Milwaukee, explained the evaluation and design of Addison’s chair in the February, 2015 Mobility Management article, “Looking for Room to Grow.” To read Jeff’s case study in its entirity, click here.
